No matter how old you are, taking care of your body is important. That’s old news. But what you may not realize is that for those of us 55 and older, it is especially important because something as simple as a fall or common cold could cause more long-term complications. The YMCA of Greater Cleveland offers a wide variety of programs to accommodate the interests and functional abilities of older adults with classes that are not only fun but also functional.
The YMCA’s Active Older Adults (AOA) programs include water exercise, strengthening and cardio classes, yoga and stretching classes, and walking clubs. Physical activity can help maintain weight which decreases the risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and more. Physical activity can also help boost immune systems so individuals have the ability to fight inflammation and infections.
The Y also offers socialization opportunities through its AOA programs, such as special events, book clubs, bus tours and lunch clubs. Mental health is just as important as physical health. When older adults have the opportunity to socialize and explore their interests, they can also alleviate some of their everyday stresses and anxieties. Plus, it’s fun.
Here are a few upcoming activities at the Cleveland Y to help older adults remain physically fit and socially healthy:
