Strange(ish) Hobbies You May Not Have Considered Before

Have you been looking for a new hobby that is somewhat out there but also sounds like fun to you? Everyone likes different things, but there are just some hobbies that are less done than others, and they might be the ones you want to look at. If you’ve not been able to find anything so far that has taken your interest, then maybe you will be able to now.

In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the different strange hobbies that you might not have considered before, but you may enjoy. Keep reading down below, if you would like to find out more.

Taxidermy

The first thing that we’re going to be looking at is taxidermy. Some people find this gross, and other people absolutely love it because they enjoy giving the animal some kind of life even though it’s not alive anymore.

It’s a hobby that requires quite a lot of patience and skill, so that’s something that you’re going to have to learn over time if you’re willing to. You won’t get it right at first, but you will notice your skills grow and evolve over time.

Looking For Aliens

If you’re someone who believes in aliens, and you want to see if you can ever spot strange happenings going on that prove your hypothesis, this can be a hobby in itself. Looking for ufo’s for example is a great way to spend your time if you’re someone who does believe that we’re not alone, and that there’s no way another life form would completely leave us alone.

To do this, we recommend you start by reading through ufo sighting reports so that you can understand what other people have seen, where they have seen it, and if there were any events or circumstances that make sightings more likely.

ThriveTalk Episode 2: How Cleveland Lost, and Then Found, Superman

When this year’s “Superman” movie hit theaters, Northeast Ohio residents saw more than just the Man of Steel; they saw Cleveland streets and buildings because part of the film was shot here. It makes sense that Superman returned to Cleveland. After all, it’s the birthplace of the action hero. Thrive’s pop culture columnist, Mike Olszewski, tells us how Glenville’s Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster created Superman in 1933, how they, and Cleveland, lost the comic book hero, and how the city is reclaiming its arguably most famous creation.

Mike Olszewski is a veteran Cleveland radio host and personality. He and his wife, Janice, are the authors of books about Cleveland TV, rock and roll, radio and other topics. Mike is Thrive’s Pop Culture Chronicles columnist. You can reach him at [email protected].

Why Creating A Short Film Is More Possible Than Ever: A Guide

Everyone has thought what it would look like if they had the means and resources to direct their own movie. Perhaps you want to create a neo-noir with a rainswept detective looking through his or her latest case and have fun with that. Or, maybe your intentions are a little more modest, and you just want to create a short promotional film for your local town, or a business you run.

Either way, flexing some of your creative muscles, covering events, and having fun with moving image production can be a great time. Up until now though, it’s often seemed as though this craft requires a massive upfront investment, and you’re not to bother unless you have a major team at your beck and call.

Now, we’re not going to dismiss the work involved, but there’s also a great deal of progress you can make if you’re careful about it. Creating a short film is more possible than ever, and here’s how:

Smartphones & Drones

You might be holding off on starting your film project because you think the gear is too expensive, but you already have one of the best cameras ever made right in your pocket, and you should start there. The video quality on the latest phones is stunning, and they’re so easy to use that you can film well and some filmmakers have even won awards doing so.

If you want to expand this with footage that helps to open up the scene, bring in a capable little flying camera like a Mini 5 Pro. A small drone like that can capture aerial shots and tracking movements that make your finished video look a little more like a high-budget production, but you’ll still keep your equipment lightweight and easy to manage.
