Register for BWU’s Institute for Learning In Retirement

Winter registration is now open for continuing education classes from the Institute for Learning in Retirement-East (ILR-East), an east-side older adult learning program affiliated with Baldwin Wallace University.

Now in its 23rd year, the ILR-East program provides college-level courses without the stress of exams, in a friendly, non-competitive environment. The six-week winter term runs from Monday, January 9 through Thursday, February 16. Most classes are offered in person at Temple Emanu El, at the corner of Brainard and Emery Roads, 4545 Brianard Road in Orange Village. Of the 12 courses offered, one is via Zoom and two are on YouTube.

Registration is due by January 5 and available only by mail. The course schedule can be found at bw.edu/ilr-east. For the registration material, contact ILR-East at (216) 987-2985 or [email protected]. Classes meet once a week and are held on Mondays (all Zoom classes), Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Masks are optional inside. Social distancing is observed.

ILR-East instructors are experienced professionals and retired professors, all of whom are volunteers. As a result, the tuition charged is very low. Annual membership is $30 per year (membership starts July 1). All students must pay the membership fee to take classes. Each course costs $20.

This quarter’s topics include art appreciation, history, women’s studies, literature, religion, comedy, and film. Some course topics include “More Neil Simon Comedies,” “Come Sit with Me and Read” – a review of children’s literature, “Bandits, Prophets, and Messiahs: The Crazy First Century” and “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.”

About the BB: The Institute for Learning in Retirement – East is committed to providing senior adults an educational and social experience that is highly accessible and inexpensive. This program is one of many ILRs associated with colleges and universities across the country.
