Mentor Library’s March Programs Feature Plenty to Do

Northeast Ohio’s public libraries are a great source for speakers, classes, craft lessons and other programs. Why not see what’s happening at a library near you while we wait for spring to take hold?

The following are March events planned through the Mentor Public Library system. But we’re sure you’ll find similar activities closer to home if Mentor isn’t convenient. Or, maybe you’ll find some of these events so interesting you’ll want to check these out:

Celebrate Mentor Public Library’s 200th Anniversary

Mentor Public Library is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2019, and there are lots of ways to join the party. Win prizes for reading along with us. Donate to local nonprofits during our Year of Giving. Get those pesky fines forgiven. For more information, visit www.mentorpl.org/200th.

 

Meditation Basics

Monday, March 11, at 2 p.m.

Main Branch in the Village Room

This fun and interactive program will teach what meditation is (and what it isn’t), how to meditate, and its positive effects on the brain as one ages. Chera Inhat from Kemper House will discuss different types of meditation available, and the last 20 minutes of class will be spent meditating together as a group.

 

Monday University: The Life of Molly Brown

Monday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m.

Main Branch in the Village Room

See history come alive as an actress from Women in History portrays the ‘Unsinkable’ Molly Brown. Acquiring great wealth from the mining industry, Molly Brown was a passenger and survivor of the ill-fated 1912 voyage of the Titanic.

 

Gardening with Petitti: Roses, Care & Maintenance

Tuesday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m.

Main Branch in the James R. Garfield Room

Join Noelle Clark Akin, director of communications and education at Petitti Garden Centers, to learn about caring for one’s roses. With 20 years of experience in the Green Industry, Akin has instructed and assisted gardeners all over Northeast Ohio through her work in Petitti’s retail stores.

 

Civil War Series: Cleveland’s Civil War Soldiers & Sailors Monument

Wednesday, March 13, at noon

Main Branch in the James R. Garfield Room

Public Square in downtown Cleveland was the site of President James A. Garfield’s funeral in 1881, and since 1894 it has also been the location of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Made of polished black Quincy stone with six foliated bronze bands listing the 30 battles in which soldiers from Cuyahoga County fought, the monument is a must-see when visiting downtown Cleveland. Learn more about the monument during this program, led by experts from James A. Garfield National Historic Site.

 

Take Time for You: Yoga Stress Relief

Wednesday, March 13, at 2 p.m.

Mentor-on-the-Lake Branch

Teens and adults can learn basic yoga techniques to help them decompress and relax after a busy day. Free to attend. Registration required.

 

Recognizing the Signs of Dementia

Thursday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m.

Main Branch in the Village Room

Learn how to spot the signs of dementia, when to be concerned, and what resources are available. Christine Iacona from Symphony at Mentor will cover techniques to help families cope with this difficult diagnosis.

 

Laser Engraver Basics

Monday, March 18, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The HUB at Mentor High School (6477 Center St., Mentor)
Learn the basics of using The HUB’s laser engraver at one of these informative presentations. Makers of all ages can get inspired for their next project and walk away with an engraved souvenir.

 

Tuesday Topics: Getting Started with Birding

Tuesday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m.

Birding is one of the most popular pastimes in America. Lake Metroparks staff will explain how to get started as a new birder.

 

Origins of the American Revolution

Thursday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m.

Mentor Public Library’s resident historian begins his year-long series, discussing the Revolutionary War. The series begins here. Learn about the ideas and interests that sparked a revolution.

 

Learn about the Lake County Volunteer Guardian Program

Monday, March 25, at 10 a.m.

Main Branch in the James R. Garfield Room

Learn how to help those in need by participating in the Lake County Volunteer Guardian Program. Lifeline and Lake County Probate Court are looking for volunteers who are interested in becoming legal guardians for people who have been medically identified as needing a guardian. To learn more, attend this free informational session with a representative from Lifeline or call Lifeline at 440-350-2233.

 

Continuous Color Using Perennials

Tuesday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m.

Main Branch in the James R. Garfield Room

Learn how to create a garden that will have something blooming or showing color all season long without using annuals. A Master Gardener volunteer will discuss and show examples of garden planning, flowers ones can use and touch on hardiness zones.

 

Classic Film Club

Wednesday, March 27, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Main Branch in the Village Room

Movie lovers can explore the golden age of cinema with a different classic film at each meeting of this bimonthly club. Enjoy the film, followed by a short discussion. Popcorn provided. This month’s film is a classic starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant.

 

Painesville Railroad Museum

Tuesday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m.

America was built on the railroads. Come to the library for a night for train lovers and learn about the past and the future of the Painesville Railroad Museum.
