Her Story
Ingrid Sussman, nee Inge Sander, was born on June 2, 1927, in Berlin, Germany. The only child of Sallie and Elisabeth Sander, she grew up surrounded by the depravity of what would become the Nazi occupation. Although only one parent, her father, was Jewish, the political and social impact was intense.
With no formal training, Inge’s artistic expression blossomed within her schooling. She explored all media, but settled on watercolors, because the difficulty “made them more challenging.” Inge and her family fled Germany in 1941, regrouped in Barcelona, then emigrated to Canada and on to New York.
She married Harry Sussman and eventually moved to Walden in Aurora with their daughter, Yvonne. There, in her studio loft, she continued to be a prolific watercolorist, exhibiting in many shows and contributing a body of work, a portion of which is now on display at her current residence, The Weils of Chagrin Falls.
