If you’ve ever wanted to know more about the interesting world of death investigations and how a crime lab works, then the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office has just the program for you: its Citizens Academy.
Applications are due by Feb. 28 for the three-month weekly evening classes to learn about the inner workings of the medical examiner’s office and lab, says county medical examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson.
“From DNA to the overdose epidemic, forensic science has seen dramatic advances over the course of my career. I am proud to work with the wonderful staff we have in Cuyahoga County and pleased to share their expertise with the citizens who make it possible,” Dr. Gilson says.
The free academy starts on April 10. Classes are at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m. and include lectures, case reviews and hands-on demonstrations from doctors, scientists, and investigators.
Topics include forensic pathology, toxicology, death investigation, trace evidence and more.
The Citizens Academy is open to all residents of Cuyahoga County. Participants must be at least 21 and have no felony convictions.
For more information or to download the application, go to their website.
All applications should be completed and submitted to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office by February 28, 2025. Applications may also be submitted to [email protected].
