The Center for LifeLong Learning continues to provide virtual learning for Winter/Spring 2021. All courses are online so you can stay safe while having fun learning! 

Don’t worry if you’re less than tech-savvy. Technology instructions and assistance will take place before each course starts to help make sure your technology is working and that you are comfortable for your classes. You can even arrange for a practice session if you have not tried WebEx before.

The French Revolution and Salt Taxes
In the 18th century salt was a preservative and often a medicine. Salt was life. While there are many factors leading up to the French Revolution, the Crown’s treatment of the peasantry in regards to salt and taxation illustrates why the aristocracy ultimately imploded under its own excess.

Paul the Apostle -Part 2
Paul takes on the daunting challenge of spreading a new religion to a world-weary people. At great personal risk, he encounters political, social, and religious resistance as he convinces pagans to abandon their millenia-long traditions in favor of a new, obscure and untested religious movement. How did he do it? (no need to attend part 1 for this class).

REMBRANDT, MASTER OF LIGHT AND SHADOW: His Life and His Work
Few Painters have been as influential as Rembrandt. His style changed the course of western art. Primarily a portraitist, he also made important contributions to landscape and printmaking affecting such artists as Goya, Courbet, Manet, and the movements of Impressionism and Expressionism. His personal life ran the gamut from enormous success to eventual bankruptcy. However, after his financial collapse he created some of his most important and influential work.

Meet the women who made history and made their mark on the world… revolutionary women who challenged the status quo and changed the rules for all that followed. From pirates to artists, warriors, daredevils, women in science, activists, and spies, the accomplishments of these incredible women who dared to push boundaries vary as much as the eras and places in which they effected change.

The Scaly Anger of Humanity
There is so much division and vitriol between us today; over politics, religion, culture. You name it, we argue over it.
And not just disagreement; a pervasive attitude of absolutism seems to provoke responses of anger, threats, shunning, riots and it seems more common-place. A modern spiritualist offers a chillingly bizarre explanation to recent human behavior; there is a darkness stimulating our anger. To what purpose? Let’s examine his arguments on its merits and conclude for ourselves.

STARRY NIGHT: The Art and Tragic Life of Vincent van Gogh
The life of the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh has been the subject of countless biographies and films. His highly expressive art reveals the joy that painting held for him but also the mental torment that tortured him for the last two years of his incredibly productive life. This lecture will cover every stage of his artistic development and the life of this troubled genius.

“The Real St. Patrick”
A young boy sold into slavery eventually escapes, only to return and single-handedly convert a pagan culture to Christianity. Along the way, he taught them literacy and helped preserve Western Civilization after the fall of Rome.

Women in Art- Fearless Creatives Who Inspired the World
This class will highlight the achievements and stories of notable women in the arts. Meet the women who used their talents to tell truths, to talk about injustice, and to bring visibility to the unseen, because that is when new ideas can spread and the world can begin to change for the better. With each brushstroke, chisel of stone, and line drawn, these women persevered. Let’s celebrate their art and their stories so we can understand how their work has influenced our lives. Art is more than just something beautiful—it shapes and reflects our world.

Reality of Dreams, Dream of Reality? Part 2
Carl Jung concluded God directly communicated to humans through dreams. Are dream images universal or unique? What do those dreams mean to us? If Jung is correct, is this the only way we might perceive God? (no need to attend part 1 for this class).

THE ART OF JAPAN: From Samurai to Shoguns
Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, tea ceremonies, and ink brush scroll paintings surround this discussion on the art of the Japanese.

MODERN ART: 20th Century Art before WW II
Painters like Matisse, Picasso, and Dali created bold and challenging works of art that put emphasis on a new abstract use of space. From the bold colors and forms of Expressionism and Cubism to the disturbing imagery in Surrealism, the art of this period is challenging to comprehend, even today.

AMERICAN ART: From Benjamin West to The Wild West
The American tradition in the visual arts is explored in this lecture. The colonial portraiture of Gilbert Stuart, the epic history paintings of Benjamin West, the Hudson River School landscapes of Thomas Cole, the western masterpieces of Frederic Remington, The Harlem Renaissance paintings of Aaron Douglas, and the Abstract Expressionism of Jackson Pollock are covered.
