Is it really only four years between presidential elections?
The presidential debate catapulted Cleveland into the spotlight earlier this election season. Throughout the long history of the United States, presidential candidates have made their way to Northeast Ohio. One of the most controversial — although no one alive today remembers him — was Andrew Johnson.
The Western Reserve Historical Society has an interesting story about Johnson’s visit in 1866 and how it partially led to him becoming the first impeached president. His behavior in Cleveland was a factor.
