Autumn puts many of us in the back-to-school mode, even if it’s been years since we’ve forgotten a homework assignment.

Get back to school by volunteering with the AARP Foundation Experience Corps, an intergenerational volunteer-based tutoring program that is proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become great readers by the end of third grade.

“We have found that both the students and tutors benefit from this program,” says Ross Jones, AARP Foundation Experience Corps program manager. “Students make progress from the personal academic assistance as well as the relationship that develops with their tutor. Volunteers benefit by being able to share their enjoyment of reading and their life experiences in order to make a difference in a child’s life.”

This year, the program is partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland for after-school tutoring at two schools.

Interested? Greater Cleveland Volunteers is the host agency in Cuyahoga County and needs literacy tutors for students in grades K-3. They want you if you’re over 50, have a high school diploma or GED, will take (and pass) a criminal background check, and can work at least five hours a week during the school year.
