Boat Building: Yes, You Can Do It, and These Folks Will Show You How

Boat Building: Yes, You Can Do It, and These Folks Will Show You How

You build it.  We show you how.

If you’ve always wanted to build a boat, a boatbuilding workshop by the Cleveland Amateur Boatbuilding and Boating Society (CABBS) will get you started.

Beginning Saturday, March 3, 2018, CABBS will offer a Boatbuilding Basics Workshop held on five consecutive Saturdays in March.  Participants will learn hands-on  by  building a “Six-Hour Canoe” designed by Mike O’Brien, the editor and publisher of Boat Design Quarterly.  Class participants will work in teams of four with each team building its own boat.

The Six-Hour Canoe is a single-person boat, 15 feet long and paddled kayak-style from a seated position.  Participants will learn boatbuilding basics as they build the boats from meranti marine plywood, spruce, ash, and Douglas fir, and use silicon bronze screws, boat nails, and fiberglass tape and epoxy to assemble it.

The workshops will be held at Soulcraft Woodshop, at 5401 Hamilton Avenue in Cleveland, just off I-90.

Novices are welcome: Participants do not need any prior experience or woodworking skills. CABBS volunteers will help participants gain fundamental skills in using hand woodworking tools.  Some complex parts will be pre-cut for easy assembly.  Minimum age to participate is fourteen.

Cost for the Boatbuilding Basics Workshop is $225 per person and includes all materials, use of the facility, and guidance by CABBS.  Registration closes February 10, 2018.  The registration form can be downloaded from the CABBS website (www.cabbs.org).  Class size is limited to sixteen participants.

A child, 11 to 14 years old can participate if accompanied by participating adults.  See the CABBS website (www.cabbs.org) for more details.

“Building a boat is an experience no one ever forgets,” says CABBS President, Ed Neal.  “It’s immensely satisfying to build something with your own hands.  And when you’re done, you have a whole new way to explore the natural world around you”.
