Time’s Running Out for Tax-Free Purchases

- in Deals, Money

If you’ve been shopping the past week, you’ve probably seen signs on doorways and at cash registers, advertising Ohio’s tax-free holiday. It  started July 30 and ends Thursday, Aug. 8.

For a brief window, retailers, including those online, don’t charge sales tax on purchases under $500, including restaurant meals, small appliances, clothing, and thousands of other items. Alcohol, tobacco and taxable services are among the items excluded from the sales tax holiday.

You’ve still got a couple of days (until midnight tomorrow) to take advantage of the tax break. In past years, the sales tax holiday was just one weekend. Savings can add up. While Ohio’s statewide sales tax is 5.75 %, the rates are higher locally—up to 8 % in Cuyahoga County—because of extra county sales taxes. All are waived during the tax holiday.
