Hiring Snow Removal Services

Hiring Snow Removal Services

Fighting Fraud

Every year, BBB gets complaints from homeowners who were left adrift by snow removal companies that were no-shows after the first big storm. Typically, homeowners have paid for services in advance, cannot reach the company, and are faced with finding someone to plow at the worst possible time. Don’t be left out in the cold.

BBB encourages homeowners to do their research when hiring a snow removal service.

Here are some key tips:

  1. Choose a BBB Accredited Business – Check BBB.org for BBB Accredited snow removal companies near you. BBB Accreditation signals trustworthiness and high business standards. Read reviews and check the company’s BBB Business Profile.
  2. Get Multiple Estimates – Get at least three estimates before deciding. Request detailed pricing upfront and ensure the estimate covers all potential costs. While the lowest price may seem tempting, it doesn’t always guarantee the best service. Compare estimates to understand the services offered and any additional fees.
  3. Ask for References – Request references from past clients to evaluate the company’s reliability, response time, and service quality. A reputable company will willingly provide references. It could be a red flag if a company hesitates or refuses to offer references.
  4. Understand the Services Offered – Clarify the services such as plowing, salting, or de-icing. Ensure they have the necessary equipment, like snowplows and salt spreaders, to handle snow removal effectively. Discuss how they manage different surfaces like driveways and walkways to avoid damage to the concrete.
  5. Get a Written Contract – Always insist on a written contract that includes the company’s address, email, and phone number. Avoid verbal agreements and ensure all details—such as the scope of work, pricing, and included services—are clearly outlined in writing. Review the contract thoroughly, paying close attention to any cancellation fees or extra charges for services like clearing sidewalks or stairs.
  6. Verify Insurance and Licensing – Check with your city hall to determine if the business has any required permits to do snow removal. Ask the company for proof of liability and workers’ compensation insurance to ensure you won’t be held liable for any accidents or damages that may occur during snow removal.
  7. Check Availability and Response Time – Ask about the company’s response times, especially during heavy snowfalls or storms. Some contractors may not be available during critical times if they work part-time. Check if the company offers emergency snow removal services for unexpected weather conditions.
  8. Understand Payment Terms – Clarify the payment structure, and whether the company charges per visit or offers a seasonal contract. Understand the billing frequency, payment methods, and cancellation policies. Avoid companies that demand full payment upfront; most legitimate companies split payments across the season.
  9. Avoid Scammers – “Storm chasers” may offer cheap services after a snowstorm, only to disappear once paid. Always verify the credentials of any snow removal company before hiring.
