Members of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS) are highly trained eye doctors experienced in helping people with vision loss. Vision loss can be from conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal dystrophy, or stroke. A person who experiences a loss of vision in both eyes resulting in difficulty with everyday tasks, may be a candidate for a low vision evaluation.

The low vision evaluation takes about one hour and is not like any other eye examination. It begins with a conversation about your vision goals or tasks that need improvement. Next, your level of vision will be measured with precision, including the location of the best area of the retina. By knowing the amount of vision you have and the amount of vision required for your tasks, the doctor will determine which low-vision glasses will work best. During the evaluation, you will experience demonstrations of many types of low-vision glasses.

Bioptic telescope glasses may improve your ability to read road signs, see facial expressions, or watch your grandchild play sports. Full-diameter telescope glasses are designed to help you watch your television, see facial expressions, and may aid you with computer work. Prismatic reading glasses and Clear Image microscope glasses often help you read your newspaper, magazines, books, or mail. Sometimes they will even help with crafts like knitting. E-Scoop glasses are another low-vision device that can clear up haze and improve vision. These glasses contain several properties that provide some magnification with a large field of view.
