REAL ID: What You Need to Know

Planning on traveling soon? Since May 7, 2025, everyone over 18 needs a REAL ID to board a domestic flight, access federal facilities, and enter certain secure locations. Better Business Bureau® (BBB®) has the information you need to obtain a REAL ID.

What is a REAL ID, and how can I identify it? A REAL ID is a federally compliant, security-enhanced identification. You can tell if your ID is a REAL ID by having a star on the upper portion of your card.

How to get your REAL ID: You can only obtain a REAL ID in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. Some states may allow you to start the process online, but you must finish it in person.

BBB Tip: If you see a website offering REAL IDs without the in-person visit to the DMV, it’s most likely fake.

What forms of identification are needed for a REAL ID? You will need proof of identity such as a birth certificate, passport, permanent resident card, proof of Social Security Number, proof of residency, and proof of a legal name change.

BBB Tip: If you are asked to provide your bank account or credit card information, that is a red flag and probably a scam.

Obtaining a REAL ID requires a fee. Check your local State Department of Motor Vehicles for more information.

If you’ve been the victim of a REAL ID scam, report it to the BBB Scam Tracker. Your report helps us build consumer awareness and reduce the effectiveness of scammers’ favorite tactics. Have additional questions? Reach out to your BBB at 216-241-7678 or [email protected]
