Pandemic Positivity: Pitch in at Drive-Through Drop-Off of Hygiene Products for the Elderly

ELYRIA – During the COVID-19 pandemic, many seniors need help getting essential items like hygiene products. Neighborhood Alliance in Lorain County is making sure they get them, and they’re asking the community to pitch in at a donation drive-through drop-off next Saturday. Here’s an opportunity for us all to pitch in for the greater good.

The organization says the need for essential items has surged over the last couple of months. Their supply is running low, so they’re reaching out to the community for help.

Neighborhood Alliance is collecting hygiene products for seniors with a drive-thru donation drop-off event at Lorain County Community College (Parking Lot #2 South) on Saturday, July 18, 11 am -2 pm.

People dropping off toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, body wash, deodorant and hand soap are encouraged to stay in their cars while volunteers unload the essential items in an effort to limit personal contact.

Then, those items will be delivered to seniors in the Neighborhood Alliance’s Senior Enrichment program, including the 300-400 homebound seniors in their Home Delivered Meals Program.

According to its website, Neighborhood Alliance has been compassionately caring for the community since 1927. Its mission is “Helping communities grow stronger by meeting critical needs and empowering individuals and families.”

The organization has surveyed its clients to determine their needs. Results show that demand has grown exponentially over the last several months. The meal delivery program, in particular, is adding 30 additional people each month since the start of the pandemic.

The nonprofit has always provided essential items for seniors in a limited capacity, but not on the scale that they have seen during the pandemic. Demand has grown so much that regular donations just aren’t meeting the need, so Neighborhood Alliance is counting on donations from other community members to keep up.

Pandemic Positivity is a new effort Boomer has launched to make people aware of the GOOD things happening amidst the coronavirus pandemic. While Contending with COVID-19 will remain a regular section on our website, it will focus more on the nitty-gritty details of how to manage your health and practical next steps as we navigate through this public health crisis. Pandemic Positivity, on the other hand, is a place where we can relax a bit and celebrate the significant — at times, inspiring— problem-solving, ingenuity and humanity demonstrated by our neighbors throughout Northeast Ohio. It also offers opportunities to get involved in efforts to help others. Stay tuned for more and feel free to submit your own stories for possible publication at [email protected].
