Exploring Encore 55+ Learning With Ted Smith

When you step into an Encore 55+ Learning Program classroom, you’ll find an inspiring blend of curiosity, energy and community. For more than 12 years, Ted Smith has been one of the program’s instructors, using thought-provoking topics and life lessons to spark conversations and build lifelong connections.

The Encore 55+ Learning Program is an innovative offering from Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®), designed specifically for adults 55 years and older. It provides intellectually enriching courses on a variety of topics — from philosophy to tai chi — aimed at cultivating personal growth, mental stimulation and community engagement.

“I think the most beautiful part of Encore is that it validates lifelong learning,” Smith said. “Learning doesn’t stop at 25 or even 75. We provide opportunities for adults to stay curious, engaged and connected. And the students bring so much richness to each session.”

Smith’s path to becoming an Encore instructor wasn’t linear.

Born and raised in Ohio, Smith spent a prolonged stint in Wisconsin, where he studied Tai Chi and martial arts.

“What started as teaching young athletes how to move like monkeys quickly turned into more meaningful work, focusing on health and wellness for older adults,” he said. “Who better to take their health seriously than those who have already lived long, full lives?”

When his wife got a job opportunity that brought him back to Ohio, Smith explored avenues to share his expertise here.

“One day, someone told me about the Encore program at Tri-C, and that’s how I got started. They didn’t need a tai chi instructor at the time, but I realized that what I loved most was the dialogue — discussing big ideas like spirituality, philosophy or even the science of something as simple as salt,” he said.

Salt ties in with one of Smith’s favorite teaching memories, when he lectured on the humble yet historically critical topic of salt in a packed auditorium.

“Salt is ubiquitous today,” Smith said, “but throughout history, it was scarce and valuable — a literal lifeline. It’s responsible for trade routes, wars and even the foundations of civilizations. I was talking about how salt regulates essential body functions like your heart’s rhythm, and the entire room was hooked. I think it’s proof that any topic can be fascinating if you approach it with curiosity and storytelling.”

What Makes Encore Special?
Encore 55+ courses are more about exploration and enjoyment than grades or deadlines, unlike typical college courses. This freedom lets ideas flow, and friendships form organically.

“The energy in the classroom is something else,” Smith said. “The average enrollment age is 75, but don’t think for a second that these participants are slowing down. They’re eager to learn and engage. Our oldest student is 95, and they outpace me some days!”

Smith sees Encore as more than just a program.

“It’s a reminder that no matter where you are in life, curiosity keeps your mind sharp and your spirit youthful,” he said. “When people walk out of a lecture or class buzzing with ideas, it’s something truly magical.”

Encore owes much of its success to individuals like Suzanne Ortiz, the program’s director of entrepreneurship and educational development.

“Suzanne brings incredible passion to everything she does,” Smith said. “She’s created an atmosphere where curiosity thrives. Thanks to her leadership, Encore has become a space where people don’t just learn — they connect deeply with one another.”

Who Should Participate?
You don’t have to be an academic or an expert in any field to enjoy the Encore program. Whether you’re newly retired and exploring your next chapter or a lifelong learner craving intellectual stimulation, Encore has something for everyone.

“We’re truly about creating a space for exploration,” Smith said. “There’s no pressure, no tests — just an environment where everyone brings their perspective to the table, making the experience richer for everyone.”

Smith encourages newcomers to take the leap.

“I’ve had people tell me, ‘I’m too old for this,’ and my answer is always the same — no, you’re not,” he said. “You’re at the perfect age to rediscover the brilliance and wonder of learning. You’re in a room full of people just like you who want to grow, share and make every day meaningful.”

Enrollment and Course Dates
The program offers multiple sessions throughout the year, with flexible scheduling to suit a variety of participants. Enrollment deadlines are quickly approaching, so reserve your spot now.

“To anyone out there wondering if it’s too late to try something new, my advice is simple: come see for yourself,” Smith said. “Encore is a place where you can be you, and that’s enough.”
