Sweet! It’s Girl Scout Cookie Time

Sweet! It’s Girl Scout Cookie Time

Samoas vs. Thin Mints.

Let the debate begin now that Girl Scout Cookie season in Northeast Ohio is officially underway.

As cookie leader for my daughter’s Brownie Girl Scout troop 25 years ago, I know firsthand what a big deal cookie sales are. At one point, my dining room was filled with hundreds of boxes of cookies awaiting pickup. I also recall the sickening feeling of backing over several cases of Thin Mints with my Dodge Caravan. Ugh.

More than 12,000 Girl Scouts participated in the Girl Scout Cookie Program in Northeast Ohio last year, selling over 2 million boxes the aforementioned Samoas (my favorite) and Thin Mints, plus Do-si-dos, Tagalongs and more.

Here’s where to get your cookie fix:

• If you know a registered Girl Scout, reach out to her to find out how she’s selling cookies in ways that meet local and state safety protocols.
• Beginning Feb. 21, enter their zip code into the Girl Scout Cookie Finder at gsneo.org/findcookies to purchase cookies online from a local troop for direct shipment.
• From March 7-30, enter your zip code into the Girl Scout Cookie Finder at gsneo.org/findcookies to find a local cookie booth nearby.

GSNEO serves 19,000 girls and 11,000 adult volunteer members throughout an 18-county region consisting of Ashtabula, Carroll, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Sandusky, Seneca, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, and Tuscarawas Counties. To volunteer, reconnect, donate, or join, visit gsneo.org.

In case you were wondering, Thin Mints is the clear favorite. Top cookies in order of popularity rank are Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos and Adventurefuls. Cookies are $6 or $7 depending on the variety.

Other cookies on sale this year are Lemon-Ups, Girl Scout S’mores, Trefoils and Toffee-tastic.

Your fair experience may be different: the flower exhibits, baby goats and the milkshake barn come to mind, for a start. Here's a rundown of the fairs coming up now through the fall.
