Style Stop
By Linda Peavy
It is winter in Northeast Ohio! The cold weather and wind chill can wreak havoc on mature skin.
Don’t fear. Linda’s here with six facial masks that help guard against the elements and sun while infusing moisture, declogging pores, and targeting fine lines and sagging. Masks are a great way to give your skin an instant pick-me-up, and below are the best masks for any skin concern.
NOTE: Most masks are recommended for use two to three times per week. Every product is different, though, so always follow the directions! Also, use your favorite exfoliator right beforehand to allow the masks to penetrate deeper and be even more effective.
1. Dryness
Did you ever think you’d actually miss the sweltering humidity of the summer? Well, your skin certainly does. Dryness doesn’t just make your skin feel tight and uncomfortable. It also makes it vulnerable to other skin problems such as redness, pronounced lines, and loss of firmness. Look for masks with essential oils, grape water, ceramides and polyphenols.
Style Shop Favorite: Caudalie Vinosource-Hydra Moisturizing Mask
NOTE: Upping your water intake and using a household humidifier during the winter months will also help enormously.
2. Breakouts/Clogged Pores
Yes, mature skin can get acne! In fact, it’s much more common than you realize. As we get older, the rate at which our skin renews itself slows down, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Look for masks that contain ingredients like salicylic acid, purified clays and sulfur. This GlamGlow pick is our favorite because it’s one of the few purifying masks that does not overdry the skin!
Style Stop Favorite: GlamGlow YOUTHMUD Glow Stimulating Treatment Mask
3. Lines/Wrinkles
Laugh lines and crow’s feet are a fact of life after a certain age. However, some masks minimize their appearance and even help prevent new ones, especially those with ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acid, and vitamin C.
Style Stop Favorite: Shiseido Benefiance Pure Retinol Intensive Revitalizing Face Mask
4. Sagging
Is your jawline not quite as firm as it was 10 years ago? Are you seeing bags under your eyes? Sir Isaac Newton never mentioned aging when he came up with his law of gravity but you can fight it with masks containing ingredients like collagen, peptides and hyaluronic acid.
Style Stop Favorite: La Mer The Lifting and Firming Mask from Sephora
5. Sun Damage
It is time for some tough love. Tanning beds cause sun damage. Believe it or not, signs of sun damage can take 10 years or more to surface. It is not too late. Masks can combat sun damage with ingredients such as high levels of vitamin C, retinoids, antioxidants and alpha hydroxy acids.
NOTE: Using a daily SPF of at least 30 is an absolute necessity if you want to avoid more sun damage!
Style Stop Favorite: Kate Somerville Vitamin C Brightening Mask
6. Redness
A red nose may be funny on a clown, but not on your beautiful face. As we get older, our skin gets thinner and more fragile, which can cause redness and irritation, especially during the dry, cold and windy winter months. Help heal and protect it with masks containing ingredients like aloe, calendula, colloidal oatmeal, licorice extract and green tea.
Style Stop Favorite: Kiehls Calendula Petal Infused Calming Mask
All products can be purchased from Sephora at local Northeast Ohio retailers and mall locations.
