Fighting Fraud
By Better Business Bureau Serving Greater Cleveland
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Better Business Bureau® (BBB®) Serving Greater Cleveland is reminding older adults that staying safe online is more important than ever. From phishing emails to text scams, cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to take advantage of unsuspecting users.
These days, it seems as if everything is online. Paying bills, checking your health records, scheduling appointments, and the list goes on. It can seem hard to avoid your computer, and with so many nuanced and intricate systems, it’s often overwhelming. But there’s no need to fret, because BBB® can help you gain confidence to use your electronic devices with ease.
BBB’s Cybersecurity Tips for Older Adults
- Watch out for suspicious emails and calls: If an email or pop-up asks you to “verify” personal information, don’t click links or download attachments. Hang up on unsolicited tech-support calls.
- Use strong, unique passwords: Create different passwords for different accounts. Consider using a password manager.
- Enable multi-factor authentication: Adding an extra step (like a code sent to your phone) keeps accounts more secure.
- Keep devices updated: Regular updates on computers, tablets, and phones fix security weaknesses scammers may exploit.
- Be careful with public Wi-Fi: Avoid online banking or shopping on unsecured networks.
- Know the red flags of a scam: High-pressure tactics, requests for payment in gift cards or cryptocurrency, and “too good to be true” offers are all warning signs.
You don’t have to face cybersecurity challenges alone. Talk with trusted family members, caregivers, or community resources if something online seems suspicious. If you need technical assistance, visit BBB.org to find reputable computer repair shops, IT services, and technical support.
