A Child Loves Reading
A child’s reading level is uniquely tied to his or her likelihood of graduating from high school. Children who can’t read at grade level by fourth grade are four times more likely not to graduate from high school.
You can use your knowledge and experience to change this statistic and help guide the next generation of readers. AARP Foundation Experience Corps is a volunteer program that trains people ages 50 and older to tutor students to become better readers by the end of third grade. The Experience Corps program currently operates in 18 communities across the United States, including here in Northeast Ohio.
Greater Cleveland Volunteers, a proud program partner of AARP Foundation Experience Corps, is looking for volunteers to work in Cleveland Metropolitan and Euclid City Schools. As an Experience Corps volunteer tutor, you’ll implement a structured tutoring method that helps students become more fluent readers.
Volunteers serve two days a week for approximately two hours each day. Through one-on-one tutoring sessions, students become better readers, improve their literacy skills, and gain much-needed confidence to continue their educational journey.
Not just students who are impacted by this experience. Our volunteers report feeling a renewed sense of purpose and satisfaction by contributing in a meaningful way to their communities. Best of all, training and ongoing support are provided. The program is a proven “triple win,” helping students to succeed, older adults to thrive, and communities to grow stronger.
