Is Your Home Summer-Ready?

As the seasons turn and the temperatures start to rise, your home should be a place where you can stay cool, comfortable and relaxed come what may, but many of us never really prepare our places for summer as well as we should and that means that out home is not always the great place it should be to hang out in the summer months, right?

The good news is it’s really easy to change that with a little preparation in the spring that will help you to avoid any discomfort and unexpected issues come summer. Sound good? Read on.

Start with your cooling system

Your cooling system is one of the most important parts of your home during the summer months. If it is not working efficiently, your home can quickly become uncomfortable. So, before the hottest days of the year arrive, you are going to want to get your air conditioner serviced just to check that it is working as it should Air conditioning system need regular maintenance to keep them up and running and as efficient as possible, so by having a professional check it over, you can be sure it won’t break down when you need it most.

Oh, and changing air filters and checking vents for blockages can also improve airflow and cooling performance, so be sure to do this regularly too.

Let fresh air in

The great thing about summer is that you can use natural ventilation to make your home feel cooler and more comfortable. You can do this by making sure that you open your windows in the early morning and evenings when the air is cooler, letting fresh air in so that it can circulate and cool the place in the most pleasant way possible.

If you are going to do this, it’s a good idea to make sure window screens are clean and in good condition so you can keep insects out while enjoying the breeze. Positioning fans near windows can also help draw in cooler air and improve circulation.

Fresh air can make a noticeable difference in how your home feels.

Block out excess heat

While sunlight can brighten your home, too much direct sun can increase indoor temperatures. Managing how much heat enters your space is, then, key to staying comfortable.

You can do this pretty effectively by using blinds, curtains or shares to block out sunlight when it is at its strongest during the hottest parts of the day. Light colored or reflective window treatments can help reduce heat while still allowing natural light to enter, so try to choose lighter shades if you can, too.

Keeping rooms shaded can lower indoor temperatures and reduce the strain on your cooling system so for the price of a few window treatments, it is really worthwhile.

Check outdoor areas

Your outdoor spaces can play a surprisingly big role in how your summers at home feel with things like patios, decks and gardens being a big feature for relaxing, dining and generally just hanging out, outdoors, if you let them support you in that way.

So, take some time to clean outdoor furniture, refresh cushions, and consider adding shade options such as umbrellas or pergolas. Making these areas comfortable encourages you to enjoy the warmer weather, and enables you to actually do so in reality because well-maintained outdoor spaces really do become an extension of your home when the weather is good for it.

Prepare for summer pests

Warmer weather often brings an increase in insects and pests. Taking preventative steps can help keep them outside where they belong, so that you do not have to worry about them at all when you want to enjoy the season.

Check for gaps around doors and windows, and seal any openings where pests could enter. Keep food stored properly and dispose of waste regularly to avoid attracting insects.

Simple measures can help you maintain a clean and comfortable environment, so why wouldn’t you?

Refresh your interior

Okay, so this is not strictly necessary, but it can be fun to change your decor so that your home feels more summery and helps you to enjoy the season more.  Swapping heavy fabrics for lighter materials can make rooms feel cooler and more inviting, for example, so consider using breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen for bedding and cushions. Lighter color schemes can also reflect more light and create a brighter atmosphere. These updates do not require a major investment but can significantly improve comfort.
