One of my guilty pleasures is seeing who’s wearing what to the annual awards shows.
I can count on the Grammy Awards for outright weird yet incredibly entertaining attire. The Emmys are a mixed bag; TV-only stars tend to fall short in the fashion field, from what I’ve observed. Then you’ve got the Screen Actors Guild attendees, who bring their A- game. Honestly, everyone has their sights and hopes set on the Academy Awards, and that’s where the fun begins.
With a fashion-aware daughter in Houston and an Atlanta daughter-in-law, we rely on furiously texted comments and FaceTime calls for our red carpet raves and rants. It’s a welcome reprieve from the serious and solemn events looming around us.
The big night is Sunday, March 15, at 7 p.m. on ABC and Hulu. Conan O’Brien returns as Oscar host. Look for red carpet coverage on ABC from 3:30-6:30 p.m., on TikTok and other social media outlets.
I get it: No one makes movies for people over 55, right? I hear it all the time. I’ve only seen a couple of the films and I’m not rooting for any one in particular. If that sounds like you, then head to your local library and check out a few past Oscar winners and contenders.
The Geauga Public Library system and others in Northeast Ohio have Oscar-nominated films available through Hoopla, their free movie-and-more platform. “Some Like It Hot,” “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Titanic,” “Apocalypse Now,” and others are waiting. See the Hoopla list here.
Here’s a list of the 2026 Best Picture nominees. I only included the stars because I think they’re more interesting than the directors (and certainly, better dressed).
