Join us for our “Speaking for League Park” book discussion program during Black History Month when we focus on Black baseball at League Park and the following books:
Satch, Dizzy & Rapid Robert by Timothy M. Gay
Integrating Cleveland Baseball by Stephanie M. Liscio
Pitchin’ Man by Leroy Satchel Paige as told to Hal Lebovitz
Only the Ball Was White by Robert Peterson
20 Years Too Soon by Quincy Trouppe
Satch, Dizzy & Rapid Robert looks at barnstorming baseball between Black and White teams during the 1930s and 1940s. Many of these games were at League Park including a memorable contest featuring Satchel Paige and Dizzy Dean on October 21, 1934. Integrating Cleveland Baseball looks at local Negro League teams from the Tate Stars to the Cleveland Buckeyes. Pitchin’ Man is a brief account of Paige’s own story including mentions of a 1941 game he pitched at League Park and barnstorming with Bob Feller. 20 Years Too Soon is the autobiography of Quincy Trouppe, the great catcher and player-manager who led the Buckeyes to championships in 1945 and 1947. Only the Ball Was White is the pioneering general history of all-black professional teams with a player register and league standings. These books are available from common retail book sources and Cleveland Public Library.
Our book discussion is open to the public and free of charge. It will begin at
