Help for the Helpers

Help for the Helpers

A new national clinical trial published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) and JAMA
Internal Medicine highlights the benefits of comprehensive support for families facing dementia. The good news is that the same support is available locally through several agencies, including Ben Rose.

The Dementia Care Study (D-CARE) followed more than 2,100 older adults living with dementia and their family caregivers for 18 months.

The study found that caregivers who had participated in dementia care programs became more confident in their ability to manage caregiving and dementia-related challenges.

“Even when a program cannot slow the disease itself, helping families feel supported and capable can make a real difference,” says David Bass, PhD, Senior Vice President at Benjamin Rose and co-author of the study.

The type of program referenced in the study, evidence-based BRI Care Consultation,  is available to all families in Ohio caring for a relative or friend living with dementia or other ongoing health conditions. Trained staff who deliver BRI Care Consultation offer help with finding and using services, provide ongoing guidance and coaching, and are a trusted source of emotional support and quality information about caregiving. This help can reduce caregiving stress and enable people to live at home for as long as possible.
