Allergies? Maybe It’s From Too Much Fall Fun

Allergies? Maybe It’s From Too Much Fall Fun

From Cleveland Clinic

Itchy eyes? Runny nose? You might want to take a closer look at your favorite fall activities. That’s because this time of year brings more than just cooler weather; it also ramps up certain allergens.

“The activities around some of the holidays this time of year have you out in dead grass, hay and other different types of plants that typically carry a lot of mold and weed pollens,” says DeVon Preston, MD, an allergist with Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Preston says fall staples like hayrides, corn mazes and apple picking can stir up mold and weed pollens and trigger symptoms. But those with allergies can still enjoy these activities by making a plan.

Start by taking any allergy medications before heading out. It’s also helpful to schedule outside activities early in the morning or later in the evening when pollen counts are lower. If allergies continue disrupting your fall fun, it may be time to see an allergist.

“If you are trying a lot of the over-the-counter medicines and your symptoms keep coming back or aren’t getting better, it’s time to see an allergist and get tested. This will help you figure out if you’re truly allergic or if something else is causing your symptoms,” he says.

Once you know what’s behind your symptoms, Dr. Preston says an allergist can help you find the best treatment.
